Everything I know about
life gardening I learned from my first garden. It was a tough teacher in those early years, with its ruthlessly, obstinate clay soil, awkward slopes, and shady growing spaces.
I made countless mistakes, lost numerous plants, shed a few tears, and gradually, very gradually, with time, stopped trying to control it and instead started to listen, watch, and learn. As cliché as it sounds, nature really does show you what works. You just have to pay attention.
These photos show a few snapshots from the beginning plus many favourite moments as the garden came into its own.
This garden was never a real show stopper, but there were moments when it couldn’t have made me happier. That said, if you love gardening, you know it’s about doing and being there, not completing, and I spent many very content hours alone there.
