It is not easy to find good gardening shows, either online or on television, but this is one ticks all the boxes and it’s available outside Australia.

I’m a garden-aholic. Time in the garden. Garden books. Garden nurseries. Garden tours. Garden videos. Hands in the dirt. Nature. Wildlife. Insects. Plants. Veggies. Fruit trees. Flowers. And more flowers.
But good luck finding more than a handful of good gardening shows!
And that’s why I’m giving the Empress of Dirt royal garden hat tip to this one.
Gardening Australia is hands down my favourite gardening show. And, in the past year or so they have reached new levels of awesomeness.
This is a welcome treat considering the state of garden shows in general.
We garden fanatics are starving for real, in-depth content. Content that is everything a garden is: earthy and natural with seasons, insects, highs, lows, plants, seeds, birds, and soil. And garden art!
Instead, at the mercy of sponsors, television production teams crank out these faux gardening shows on how to makeover a backyard in a day or that sort of thing. It’s consumerism that has little to do with gardening: there just happens to be some plants and mulch involved.
A few good shows have come and gone over the years, but nothing as diverse and long-lasting—and readily available—as Gardening Australia. And it’s bountiful: they produce a lot of episodes each year!
I always thought I was dreaming to think we could have a similar production in Canada, with our huge country, relatively low population, and no funding, but they have all the same challenges in Australia and they’ve pulled it off!
Why Gardening Australia is It
So, what’s so great about gardening Australia?
It’s real, interesting, encouraging, and inspiring all in one!
To me, the mark of any good gardening content is it leaves me wanting to get out there and grow. Dig. Create. Observe. Be there.
Gardening Australia checks all the boxes:
- A dedication to organic practices. For years!
- Diversity: Plants. People. Garden styles.
- DIY projects: upcycling, recycling, quirky, creative.
- Spotlights on community and school food-growing initiatives.
- Guerilla gardens.
- Restoration and conservation efforts: parks, natural areas, waterways, species.
- Human hosts. (That’s both a compliment and a dig at some other shows.)
- Plant care tips: sowing, planting, propagation, harvesting.
- An epically beautiful and varied country.
- And, even though I’m in Canada with a whole other climate and plants, I learn something new I can apply to my garden every single week.
- But the best news of all: the show is available around the world!
Take that, BBC! Who makes it impossible to see Gardeners’ World outside the UK.
