Check your seed packet for expected days to germination. This is approximately how long this test will take. Follow any preparations required such as stratification or scarification.
Gather materials and wash your hands before handling seeds.
Label container or food storage bag with name of seeds (or keep notes).
Moisten sheet of paper towel with warm water until moist but not dripping wet when squeezed.
Place 10 seeds on one side of paper towel, spreading them apart to allow room for sprouting.
Fold over paper towel to cover seeds and place in food container or bag. Adding a lid or closing bag is optional: the goal is to keep the paper towel moist at all times—not too wet or dry.
Store in dark, warm location like a kitchen cupboard or keep on heat mat at temperature recommended for germinating your specific seeds. A temperature of 70°F (21°C) suits many seeds.
Set a reminder in your phone or calendar to check seeds every day or two when you are nearing the expected days to germination indicated on the seed packet. Re-moisten paper towel as needed. Allow extra time (days) for test if temperature is lower than desired. It is also helpful to take progress photos to detect subtle differences as seeds begin to sprout.
If seeds sprout, you can sow them. Also note how many sprouted to understand approximate germination rate.
